Gold Miners eliminate Voodoos

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners got a pair of tallies from Logan Fredericks while Brayden Stortz scored once and set-up two others to help them defeat the Powassan Voodoos 4-1 Tuesday in Game 6 of their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League East Division semifinal at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

With the victory Kirkland Lake wins the best-of-seven series four games to two and will now advance to the East Division final vs. the Cochrane Crunch.

In Tuesday’s contest, Powassan did get off to a good start, notching the night’s opening marker 3:52 in as Kyle Moore collected his second of playoffs.

It stayed 1-0 Voodoos until early in the second stanza when Fredericks tied it 41 seconds into the session.

The Gold Miners sniper then added the eventual game-winner 10 and a half minutes later as the home side took a 2-1 lead into the third.

In the final frame, Kirkland Lake put the game away getting insurance efforts courtesy of Alexander Hester as well as one from Stortz into an empty net late to close out the series.

Joe Marcoullier made 25 saves to record the win for the Gold Miners while Garrett Forrest stopped 26 of 29 in a season-ending defeat for Powassan.
