Great Lakes Division closes Interdivisional Series with 5-3 mark on Day 4

Ducks and Northern Lights cap perfect weekends

The Great Lakes Division struck back on the final day of the Minnesota Junior Hockey League’s Interdivision Series, winning five of the eight games to pick up its first winning day on the last of four days spent in Rochester.

Marquette won for the second straight day, Illiana capped a 3-1 week, and Wooster, Tri City and Wisconsin also came up victorious.

Meanwhile, two Minnesota Division teams finished off a perfect week, as both the Twin Cities Northern Lights and Dells Ducks won again to go 4-0 in their stay.

The Minnesota Division ended up with a 19-13 mark in the 32-game extravaganza, which finished with another exciting day Sunday.

Here is a recap of the all that took place Sunday in Rochester:

Marquette Royales 10, Edina Lakers 2

The Marquette Royales put a stamp on their first weekend in the MnJHL with a bang Sunday in Rochester, routing the Edina Lakers 10-2 to exit town with a pair of victories.

A one-goal game after 20 minutes, the Royales closed out their final game of the weekend with seven unanswered goals in the second and third period.

Robby Gervino had a natural hat trick in the second period alone, Dallas McLaughlin finished of a hat trick of his won with a power play goal in the third, as both finished their stay in Rochester with five-point performances.

Drew Jarvis added a goal and three assists to the total, Lane King scored once and set up two, Jeff Salzburn had a trio of assists and goaltender Nate Eminger made 28 saves in the win.

Dallas Marvin and Colton Budreau each scored for Edina, which also got two assists form John Fisher in the loss.

Twin Cities Northern Lights 3, Fort Wayne Federals 2

The Twin Cities Northern Lights found their way to a fourth victory of the weekend Sunday, winning a tightly contested 3-2 affair with the Fort Wayne Federals.

Andrew Bergquist’s goal at 2:01 of the third proved to be the game-winner, as he broke a 2-2 draw with an unassisted marker early in the final period. Anthony Rickberg and Tyler Robert scored in the first and second periods respectively for the Northern Lights.

Brendan Lewis scored for Fort Wayne in each of the first two periods, and goaltender Tyler Martz was good on 32 of the 35 shots he faced.

Illiana Blackbirds 4, Maple Grove Energy 2

The Illiana Blackbirds halted Maple Grove’s perfect weekend by finishing off an impressive four days for itself with a 4-2 victory over the Energy.

Nathan Alosio scored a game-turning goal in the second, and Chad Miller a power play goal in the third to provide the difference for Illiana. Alosio’s goal came just 16 seconds after Maple Grove had evened the game at 2-2 on a goal from Buddy Napier.

The Blackbirds led 2-1 after one on goals by Antonio Ercoli and Miller in the first.

Austin Burt netted the first Energy goal of the night, which ended the weekend with a 3-1 mark.

Illiana matched that mark during its stay in Rochester.

Rochester Ice Hawks 5, St. Louis Frontenacs 3

The hometown Rochester Ice Hawks closed out their weekend by winning for a third time with a 5-3 victory over St. Louis Sunday.

Scoreless after the first period, the two team’s spent the middle period exchanging jabs, as a back-and-forth 12-minute span of the frame got the score to 3-3.

Alex Rowland registered the first goal of the game, putting St. Louis ahead 1:33 into the second. Rochester’s Josiah Habighorst tied it 1:05 later, but the Frontenacs would be back up by a goal 43 seconds later when nick Toby scored on the power play.

The lead would last all of 44 seconds though, as Rochester tied the game again on a Jamie Blair goal at the 4:05 mark. This time, St. Louis waited 1:36 to retake the lead, as Cole Rosin scored to put the Frontenacs ahead 3-2.

But Rochester would once again even the game on a goal from Felix Conrads at 13:51, before getting goals from Patrick Large and Conrads again in the third to win 5-3.

Wooster Oilers 6, Steel County Blades 5

The Wooster Oilers used their final appearance of the weekend to spoil the Steel County Blades home opener Sunday.

The two teams travelled to the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna to conclude their MnJHL Interdivisional Series, where a pair of goals from the Oilers in the final 2:14 turned the tables on the host Blades.

Rubin Chavarria and Dillon Kessey scored the game deciding goals. Chavarria eved the score at 5-5 with a power play  at the 17:46 mark, before Kessy came back to score again for Wooster with 1:07 to play.

That was after Steele County had mounted a rally of its own. Down 3-2 heading into the third, Wooster went ahead by a pair on a goal from Kyle Hickman 1:14 into the third. But Steel County came back with successive goals from Josh Larson and two from Yuriy Kobzyev to take a 5-4 lead.

Josh Larson also scored twice for the Blades in the loss, and Jake Hainline ended up with a goal and two assists. Kessy had two goals and two assist for Wooster, and Daniel Stenzel finished his day with three assists.

Tri City Ice Hawks 5, Minnesota Owls 4

The Tri City Ice Hawks escaped out of Rochester with a shootout victory against the Minnesota Owls Sunday, crediting Tri City with its second victory over the weekend.

Minnesota appeared to take control of the outcome in the second period. Down 2-1 midway through the first, the Owls got one back before the intermission before striking for a pair in the second to go ahead 4-2.

Zak Lambrecth and Dan Trageser scored goals for Minnesota in the second, but Tri City would rally to get within one on a goal from Kyle Latimer before the third. Steven Sewell then went on to even the game at 4-4 for Tie City at the 11:56 mark of the third.

Steven Kelly ended up with four points for the Owls. He scored the first two Minnesota goals of the game and then assisted on both Lambrecth and Trageser’s goals.

Sewell added an assist to go with his game-tying goal, and Ice Hawks goaltender Nicholas Allen made 50 saves in the victory.

Wisconsin Rampage 5, Hudson Crusaders 0

The Wisconsin Rampage didn’t take a lot of shots. Eighteen of them to be precise. But they made good on five, which was more than enough in a 5-0 shutout of the Hudson Crusaders Sunday.

Thomas Graham earned the blank sheet in goal, turning aside all 20 Hudson shots to earn the win for the Rampage.

Devin Panzeca scored a pair of goals for Wisconsin, as the team netted two in the first and then three in the second in the win.

Daniel Lutsch added a pair of assists, and Nicholas Riscossa had a goal and an assist for the Rampage.

Dells Ducks 7, Central Wisconsin Saints 2

The Dells Ducks and Central Wisconsin Saints ventured back into their home state to finish off their respective MnJHL Interdivisional Showcase appearances in a game that served as the 2013-14 home debut for the Ducks.

The hosts didn’t disappoint either, rolling up a 7-2 victory over Central Wisconsin to cap a 4-0 weekend.

Ian Wood scored a pair of goals for the Ducks, Layne Martin had a goal and two assists, and Ian Harris, Jeremy Szczurek and Yari Neitenback two assists each in the win.

Nicholas Marddirossian and Dominic Manochio each scored for Central Wisconsin.
