Grigorenko’s draft stock falling May 17, 2012 8:16 AM

Over the last few months, scouts have been debating whether Mikhail Grigorenko would surpass Nail Yakupov as the top selection in this year’s NHL Entry Draft. Now, more than a few are wondering if the Russian-born center even belongs in the top 20.

In December, TSN scout Craig Button had Grigorenko sixth in his monthly rankings. He was seventh in January and 14th in April. On Wednesday, Grigorenko’s 18th birthday, Button dropped him to 20th.

“I don’t dislike Mikhail, [I] just don’t see him as an elite player. [He] will play in the NHL and should be good,” Button tweeted.

The Quebec Remparts forward is falling on most lists. International Scouting Services, which had Grigorenko third overall last month, dropped him to fourth in its rankings on Wednesday.

TJHN has Grigorenko listed in the top ten at number nine, but his stock may continue to fall.

1. Nail Yakupov
2. Filip Forsberg
3. Matt Dumba
4. Ryan Murray
5. Morgan Reilly
6. Alex Galchenyuk
7. Griffin Reinhart
8. Jacob Trouba
9. Mikhail Grigorenko
10. Cody Ceci

Failing to produce wins in the playoffs and display the leadership and "take over the game" level of play is not helping. Grigorenko finished the post-season with three goals and 10 points in 11 games. He had a goal and an assist and was minus-5 in the final four games of he series. The true leader, dominating player worther of top three pick status should be able to take over games. When leading a series three games to none, a player of Grigorenko’s status should be the player closing out the series.

Stay tuned as TJHN reports on one player next week who’s stock is rising.
