Junior Players at the NHL Combine June 4, 2012 8:01 AM

Considering the combine’s dubious value these days, as many teams stage their own pre-draft workouts, and agents are training players specificaly for combine events, calling into question individual fitness performances. Many teams still see the combine as just one aspect in the process of scouting.

Getting insight as to what type of personality a player has, is equally inf not more important than conditioning. But the combine is valuable as it allows teams to compare fitness levels of past draft picks with those of current prospects. Records will be kept and used as baselines to compare players past and present.

Much of the early attention was forcused on Mikhail Grigorenko, who scored 40 goals and 45 assists last season playing for the Quebec Remparts in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, and Alex Galchenyuk, who missed all but two regular-season games after tearing his ACL. Central Scouting currently ranks them as third- and fourth-best North American skaters, respectively.

Mikhail Grigorenko who has mono is not participating. Nail Yakapov, potential number one over all pick, performed as well as expected.

Alex Galchenyuk, Yakupov’s teammate on the OHL’s Sarnia Sting and the No. 2-ranked North American skater heading into this season was impressive. The 6-foot, 198-pound centre scored 83 points in 63 games a season ago. Galchenyuk missed all but two regular-season games after tearing his ACL.

With the draft scheduled only a few weeks away in Pittsburgh, its now off to the war room to decide who goes where, who is this years shock pick, and who is this seasons non pick. TJHN wishes the best to all who are even considered.
