Kemptville Rumored Sale Takes Place June 26, 2012 7:00 AM

For the better part of the last three months rumors have been swirling about the sale of the Kemptville 73’s. Those rumors we confirmed with a sale of the club to former NHL goalie Ron Tugnutt and Nepean’s Bob Thompson.

Formerly playing as a junior b team, the franchise joined the Central Canadian Junior Hockey League in 2007.

With Thompson and Tugnutt, along with Pat Malloy entering his third season as Kemptville’s head coach and general manager, the 73’s are now ready to move forward.

Thompson, who had been working with the 73’s for the past two years as an adviser, was told by Brenton that he was interested in selling the team. Thompson knew Tugnutt from previous business dealings and enlisted him to be a co-owner. A successful offer was put together for Brenton in short order.Tugnutt and Thompson then had to go through an extensive examination process by the CHL before the ownership change could be approved.

A few weeks later and the sale was closed.

Tugnutt enjoyed a 537-game NHL career between 1988 and 2004 with Quebec Nordiques, Edmonton, Anaheim, Montreal, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, Columbus and Dallas. He is the current goaltending coach for Hockey Canada and the under-18 national team. When in Kemptville, Tugnutt will be on the ice with the 73’s, working with their goaltenders, giving the team the benefit of his experience.

That kind of experience can not be found on every team and should garner the 73’s a little recruiting edge this summer.
