London Knights Streak Ends At 24 Straight Wins January 2, 2013 8:00 AM

It took over time, but the winning streak of the London Knights was ended last night by the Sarnia Sting. The Knights came one game shy of tying the 1984 Kitchener Rangers’ win streak of 25 games, an amazing feet in anyones eyes.

The game may have been an end to a winning streak, but it may have also been the beginning of stardom for one Sarnia Sting player. Down three to zero, seventeen year old forward Nikolay Goldobin took over the game. Playing in the shadow of Alex Galchenyuk, Goldobin has put together a noteworthy season, with 14 goals and 28 points in 37 games. Goldobin is now tied with Erie’s Connor McDavid for goals by a rookie with 18.

Usually it’s the Knights who pull a rabbit out of their hat, yesterday it was the Sting who refused to lose. After the first period, The Knights led 3-0. They were still ahead 5-3 in the third but the Sarnia Sting came back and took the win a little over a minute into overtime. Final score: 6-5. In his first multi point game Goldobin scored his fourth goal of the night 1:11 into overtime to send London home.

The Knights had beaten every team in the OHL during the streak except for three, Saginaw, who they play Friday, Ottawa and Erie.

Twenty four games. Forty eight straight points in the standings. An amazing streak by any measure.

The Knights started the season winning just eight of their first 15 games, now theyve battled their way to the top of the Ontario Hockey League standings with 67 points. The next best club is their Western Conference and Midwest Division rivals Owen Sound Attack with 53 points.

How the Knights bounce back from this defeat is what will determine how good this team can be down the streatch. A loss should only serve to make this team hungry again, it should fuel them as they run toward the playoffs.

As for Sarnia, they may loose Galchenyuk to the NHL if the lockout ends, but Goldobin isnt NHL draft eligible until 2014, so you have him for at least another season. Enjoy him while you do.
