Lumberjacks Goalie to NCAA Alaska Fairbanks June 28, 2012 6:52 AM

Muskegon Lumberjacks, entering just their third USHL season, seem to have a knack for finding NCAA bound players and getting them there. John Keeney is just another example of this.

Having started his USHL career with the Omaha Lancers in 2009, he was traded to Muskegon two seasons later.

Keeny played in 38 games for Muskegon and was responsible for the team’s only two shutouts of the season. Keeney was kept busy this season as the Lumberjacks allowed an average of 34.1 shots on goal per game, the third most in the USHL. He made 40 or more saves in a game six times and in one game—a shutout of Youngstown last December—he made 44 saves.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks, a Division 1 school, has awarded Keeny a four-year scholarship to play hockey.

The Lumberjacks have shown an amazing ability to assist players in securing D-1 College scholarships. Before the end of their first season nearly two thirds of the rostered players had D-1 commitments.

Winning may be nice in the box score reports come monday, but a real win in the USHL is moving a player on to college. They may not have made the playoffs last season but the Lumberjacks and Keeney clearly had a great season.
