Micheletto to Coach UMass July 16, 2012 7:34 AM

After 12 years Toot Cahoon and U-Mass parted ways on June 19th. Many names have been thrown around as replacements for Cahoon. Those names have included Quinnipiac coach Rand Pecknold, Holy Cross coach Paul Pearl, and Mark Carlson, a former UMass-Lowell player who currently is coach and part owner of the Cedar Rapids in the United States Hockey League.

TJHN sources have confirmed that the Minutemen have decided to hire Vermont associate coach John Micheletto as its next hockey coach.

A native of Chicago, Micheletto is a 1984 graduate of Milton Academy and played collegiately at Dartmouth. He has worked closely with Vermont coach Kevin Sneddon throughout his 22-year coaching career, serving as an assistant on Sneddon’s staff at Union from 1996-99. After a stint as an assistant coach at Notre Dame from 1999-2003 under Dave Poulin, Micheletto rejoined Sneddon when he was hired at Vermont in 2003.

Micheletto, who also has an extensive background coaching with USA Hockey, was promoted to associate coach in 2006. Along with serving as the Catamounts’ director of recruiting, Micheletto worked closely with the team’s forwards and power-play unit.

Micheletto will become the third coach of the Minutemen since the program returned to the ice in 1993 after a 15-year hiatus. He takes over a UMass program that has gone five consecutive seasons without a winning record. Those fortunes could change quickly.

Is there a Jonathan Quick or other NHL player on the roster for Micheletto to work with? There are seven former USHL players on the roster. Development of players has not been an issue for UMass. Quick won a Stanley Cup, Mike Kostka recently signed with the Maple Leafs, Sophomore Kevin Boyle, junior Michael Pereira, sophomore Oleg Yevenko and freshman K.J. Tiefenwerth are all attending camp with the New York Islanders, while junior Conor Allen is in prospect development camp with the Vancouver Canucks and senior Eddie Olczyk has been invited to the Carolina Hurricanes’ conditioning camp.

With the talent already assembled, there are once again high hopes for UMass.
