MNJHL’s Tri City Ice Hawks Add OHL Experience At Head Coach

george daniel

The MNJHL has been increasing the quality of Head Coaches it has been bringing into the league the last few seasons.  Last year the Dells Ducks with the addition of Bill Zaniboni went from next to last place to within one over time goal of representing the MNJHL at USA Hockey’s Tier III National Championships.  This year, Marty Quarters has been taken the Head Coaching position of the Central Wisconsin Saints.

Following Zaniboni and Quarters is now OHL verteran Saginaw Spirit Assistant Coach George Daniel.  Daniel takes over an Ice Hawks team that was vastly improved last season.

George started his coaching career at the prep level coaching the Riverview Varsity Hockey team (2000-2005).  In his five years at Riverview, the team overachieved each season.  By season three Riverview would win the first of three league titles, followed by back to back regional titles only to lose to Division 3 powerhouse Cranbrook.  At Riverview Daniel earned league coach of the year honors twice.

(2006-2010) Daniel accepted a position as Head Coach of the Detroit Compuware Midget Major team as well as became Compuware Youth Hockey Director.  During his time at Compuware a large number of players were moved on to NAHL, USHL, and OHL teams. Developing players has always been Daniel’s forte.  Standout players that developed through the Compuware system during Daniel’s tenure include Dan Dekeyser (Detroit Red Wings), Torey Krug (Boston Bruins), Jacob Trouba (Winnipeg Jets), and Stefan Noesen (Anaheim Ducks).
In 2010 Daniel accepted a position as Assistant Coach with the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL.  In Daniel’s first season with the Spirt, Saginaw captured the first division championship in franchise history, as well as first playoff series victory.  At Saginaw Daniel was responsible for developing the teams forwards and penalty kill.  In his time with Saginaw the special teams unit never finished outside of the top ten in the league.
This level of experience, and the connections to higher levels of junior hockey will serve incoming Ice Hawks players very well.  Who will be next to join the list of players Coach Daniel has worked with?  If you would like to add your name to this list, contact Coach Daniel today.  [email protected]
