NAHL Soo Eagles Camp May 14, 2012 7:46 AM

The move to the NAHL officially became an on ice reality this past weekend. More than 160 players from throughout the state of Michigan and as far away as Russia made their way to Big Bear Arena for a shot at making the team.

Skating on the Olympic ice sheet for the first two days allowed for players to show some speed, while forcing others to change their games defensively.

Of note were the large amount of returning players that attended. Former Traverse City North Stars players who’s player rights transferred with the sale and move to the Soo were competing to retain those positions. Eagles Management has made it clear to all players that no roster spot is guaranteed for returning players.

Several players from the NOJHL version of the Eagles were also on the ice competing this weekend as well. Mixing these returning players in with free agents attending in order to maintain balance was no easy task.

After the first round of cuts were made, the games moved to the smaller NHL sized ice sheet. This had its intended effect of forcing players to be a little more physical and play as a team. Immediately the tempo of the games became more physical, while it allowed some of the very skilled players to become even more noticeable.

Several NCAA programs were there to watch camp as well as the Dells Ducks from the MnJHL, and the NA3HL Flint Jr. Generals. Eagles Staff and Ownership went out of their way to make sure that everyone attending had any player information needed. Soo Eagles billett families and volunteers were out in force assisting in the detailed operation.

As always, the Eagles hasd their game together. Beginning the transition to the NAHL on ice product went smoothly, and the prognosis for the teams future is bright.
