Special teams sends Gold Miners past Eskis

KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. – The Kirkland Lake Gold Miners score three times on the power play and once shorthanded to help them thump the Iroquois Falls Eskis 7-1 Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at the Joe Mavrinac Community Complex.

Iroquois Falls did get off to a nice start as they notched the night’s opening tally a minute and a half in on Ryan Gruszka’s seventh goal of the season.

Kirkland Lake tied it at 13:32 with their first man advantage effort of the evening compliments of captain Ashton Amaya.

The Gold Miners then got the eventual game-winner from William Mizuik early in the second while his side was down a man.

Alex Storjohann picked up another for the home side at even strength to put them up 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Kirkland Lake then put the game away in the third as they tacked on four more markers to win going away.

Mizuik’ added another to start the outburst before Tyler Fyfe scored twice, including once on the power play, to put the hosts up by five.

Austin Anselmo then finished things off at 18:48 while the Gold Miners were on a late extra man opportunity.

Kevin Ford dished out three assists for the winners to aid their offensive cause.

Victor-Olivier Courchesne made 34 saves to record the win for Kirkland Lake.

Trevor Hawkes was busy in net for the Eskis as he faced 57 shots in defeat.
