Warriors clinch spot in BCHL postseason with road win in Powell River

A night after coming away empty-handed in Chilliwack, the West Kelowna Warriors picked up the two points they needed to secure a playoff berth with a 6-2 road win over the Powell River Kings.

Matthew Dupont’s goal for the Kings in the first briefly tied the game but Seb Lloyd’s second tally of the opening frame made put the Tribe up a goal after one. Max French’s first of two goals proved to be the winner at 5:39 of the second.

Matt Scarth had the other Kings goal but Steven Myland made 42 saves for West Kelowna to earn his second BCHL win. Marcus Basara had four assists for the winners.

In Merritt, the outcome was in question heading into the third but a Sebastien Pare goal gave the Centennials the insurance they needed in a 3-2 win over the Penticton Vees. The Cent’s led 2-0 after one on goals by Bennett Huber and Sam Johnson but John Siemer cut the lead in half with a second-period, power-play goal. Cam Amantea got a a late goal but Tyler Steel’s 36 saves preserved the win.

A late rally by the Vernon Vipers got them a 3-2 overtime win over the Cowichan Valley Capitals. The Caps’ Garrett Skrbich scored 20 seconds into the game and Jesse Neher made it 2-0 early in the second. Mitch McAllister got the Snakes on the board and Mason Blacklock tied it and then scored the winner late in the first overtime.

The Chilliwack Chiefs scored two third-period goals to complete a comeback win over the visiting Surrey Eagles. Joel Gaudet and Trevor Cameron had Surrey up 2-1 after one but Austin Plevy tied it in the second and Phil Zielonka’s power-play tally in the final frame was the winner before Plevy’s empty-netter to seal it.

Reid Sturos scored twice, including the game-winner at 12:50 of the second, helping the Nanaimo Clippers build a 3-0 lead on their way to a 5-2 road win over the Coquitlam Express. Will Cook got the Express on the board in the second but Mason Mitchell tallied for the Clips near the midway point of the third to restore the three-goal lead. Derek Dun made 30 saves to earn the win.

The Victoria Grizzlies scored a goal each period, including one in the first and third by David Walchuk, to down the Alberni Valley Bulldogs 3-1. Leo Fitzgerald put the Grizz up two early in the second before Chase Van Allen got the ‘Dogs on the board. Pearce Eviston had a pair of assists for Victoria.
