Facebook as a news source? In todays world it seems as though you can learn a lot before most people by paying attention to social networking sites.

The Vernon committee bidding to have the city host the 2014 Royal Bank Cup Junior A hockey championship tournament at Wesbild Centre is reporting on its Facebook page they’ve won the bid. Vernon had been competing against a city from Quebec for the right to host the tournament.

Wrapping up the bid will require a contract with Hockey Canada. That contract is expected to be signed within the next few weeks.

Hockey Canada published its annual meeting notes on Sunday. That publication says a June 16 Kickoff Rally will feature a Hockey Canada representative, appearances by former Vernon Vipers and Vernon Lakers, and short speeches by Mayor Rob Sawatzky and Regional District of North Okanagan Chairperson Patrick Nicol.

At the Rally, fans will learn details about ticket sales, volunteer opportunities, and sponsorship opportunities. Further details about that Rally will be provided by May 30.

This will mark the second time Vernon has played host to the national championship tournament. The first was in 1990, when the then-Centennial Cup tournament first expanded to five teams.

TJHN will provide updates as more news becomes available.
