Aberdeen Arena Expansion May 24, 2012 7:24 AM

Work on an expansion to the Odde Ice Center could be done in stages instead of all in one year.

The project is still moving forward, but has been slowed by a fire at the home of Greg Odde, owner of the Aberdeen Wings junior hockey team and a related death in the family.

The 170-foot-by-30-foot expansion will be on the south side of the building at the county fairgrounds. The Brown County Commission approved the addition on the county-owned land at the fairgrounds, but no money will be requested from the commission or the Aberdeen City Council. The approval was provided several months ago.

The addition’s which will include a larger locker room and laundry facilities for the Wings, offices for team staff, a training area and space that would be used for storage and, eventually, more locker rooms for Aberdeen youth hockey.

The second floor additions which may be complete this year will include suites for Wings games. There is still flexibility in the plans, but they call for four to six suites that will accommodate roughly 150 fans. The box seats will be above the player benches and across the ice from the arena’s main bleachers.

No starting date for construction has been set.

A May 12 fire damaged Odde’s home, the same day his grandson, who lived with Odde and his wife, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the house.

The Odde Ice Center addition will extend 10 feet beyond landscaping that’s on the Odde Ice Center’s south side. Construction won’t interfere with the fair, county officials say, and county officials don’t expect it to hinder drainage at the fairgrounds.

The Aberdeen Hockey Association owns the Odde Ice Center. The Wings are a tenant, leasing ice time for practices and games. In 2006, Odde bought naming rights to the building, which opened in 2003.
