Atlantic Hockey Conference Student Athletes garner 4.0 or better GPA July 10, 2012 7:51 AM

A record 14 student-athletes will be honored as the Atlantic Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year for the 2011-12 season, by posting a 4.0 or better GPA during the season. Of the 14 student-athletes there are seven seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and three freshman. Niagara had four student-athletes honored, while American International, Army, RIT and Robert Morris have a pair of student-athletes. Mercyhurst and Canisius had a single student-athlete named Student-Athlete of the Year.

Junior Ryan Leets (Army) becomes the first student-athlete named Student-Athlete of the Year three times. Junior Chenye Rocha joins his teammate, Leets as one of the 14 student-athletes honored. The four student-athletes from Niagara are, seniors, Dan Baco, Robert Martini and Chris Noonan, along with sophomore Kevin Ryan. Senior Michael Penny and sophomore Matt Cassidy represent American International, while seniors Trevor Eckenswiller and Chris Haltigin are the representatives from RIT. Robert Morris’ freshman Jeff Jones and Tyson Wilson earned the honor, while senior Patrick Goebel from Mercyhurst and sophomore Ryan Bohrer from Canisius collect the award.

For a ninth straight year a new standard has been set in the classroom for the student-athletes of Atlantic Hockey as 179 have earned a spot on the All-Academic Team. The 179 student-athletes eclipses the mark of 175 that were honored after the 2011-12 season. In the ninth year of existence, 18 players earned their fourth appearance on the All-Academic squad. In addition, 26 are appearing for the third time, while 58 are being honored for the second time.

Robert Morris had a high of 26 members on the All-Academic Team with American International following the Colonials with 22. Robert Morris had the most returning members on the All-Academic Team with 19, while AIC followed with 15 players that appeared on last year’s squad. Of the 24 players that earned All-Conference and All-Rookie honors this past season, 14 of them were also named to the All- Academic Team.

To qualify for the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team an individual must post a 3.0 grade point average or higher in all of the academic periods during which his team was actively competing. Atlantic Hockey’s Top Scholar Athlete is an award given annually to the player or players who achieves the highest grade point average over the course of the academic semesters of competition.

The Atlantic Hockey Association was formed when nine institutions joined together in 2003, to found a new Division-I men’s ice hockey conference. The league currently consists of twelve members: Air Force Academy, American International College, Army, Bentley University, Canisius College, the University of Connecticut, the College of the Holy Cross, Mercyhurst College, Niagara University, Robert Morris University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Sacred Heart University.
