Ben Johnson Now Coaching Duluth Clydesdales November 27, 2012 8:35 AM

If the name Ben Johnson sounds familiar, it should.

Johnson was "the man" when it came to Prep Hockey in the United States a few years ago. Coaching the prep powerhouse Shattuck St. Mary’s team to back to back National Championships.

The former USHL and WHL player took his experience to the bench rather than moving on to play minor pro. That experience lead him from Shattuck to the North American Hockey League last season as Head Coach of the expansion Minot Minotauros. After one season behind the bench in Minot he decided to step back and consult with his home town team in Duluth.

So much for stepping back. Johnson stepped up to the Head Coach Position in Duluth just before the Thanksgiving break. The Clydesdales are struggling to win games this season, and the change was needed.

Speaking to Owner and General Manager Butch Williams late last week, Butch was excited to see what Johnson could bring to the Clydesdales in short order. "We are under the gun so to speak. Being in a Canadian based league, we only have until December 1st to turn in our player cards for a 25 man roster. If Ben needs to make changes, he only has a week to do it. Its a tough situation to be thrown into, but we are confident he can coach up our current group while adding some new pieces to the puzzle."

Williams is no stranger to the rink either. A former NHL player, and long time coach in the Duluth area, the combination of experience in the front office with Johnson and Williams should see results positive results on the ice.
