Chilliwack vs Penticton could be best ever in BCHL

There’s a long way to go, but the Chilliwack Chiefs are one game closer to pulling off what would be one of the greatest upsets in B.C. hockey history.

The Chiefs beat the heavily favoured Penticton Vees 3-1 Tuesday night to tie the best-of-seven firstround series at two.

Facing some of the best junior A talent in the country, the Chiefs turned Tuesday’s game into trench warfare in which scoring chances were at a premium and territory was fiercely contested.

In several regular season games between the two squads, Penticton overcame slow starts with dominant efforts in the second and third efforts. But on Tuesday, it was the Chiefs who ramped up their play in the second period, outshooting Penticton 18-7 and outscoring them too.

The Chiefs took that 3-0 lead into the third, but also had 1: 13 in a Tyler Miller holding penalty to kill. Facing the top team in the country, the lead seemed far from secure.

Vees coach Fred Harbinson gambled to start the period. As soon as his team achieved possession, he pulled his goalie, giving Penticton a six-on-four advantage. Chilliwack couldn’t get the puck out of the zone, much less on the empty net, but the Chiefs still managed to hold the fort as the power play ended and Katunar returned to his goal.

Penticton edged closer a minute later, however, when Mario Lucia’s wrist shot eluded Gillam. But as the period wore on, the Chiefs’ puck pursuit combined with a decaying ice surface to frustrate the talented Vees and snuff out any comeback.

The teams will now head back to Penticton. After last weekend’s game two victory.
