CHL Prospects game to be hosted by Halifax in 2013

The Halifax Mooseheads received word this week that they will host the 2013 Home Hardware CHL Top Prospects Game.

The Mooseheads will become the first team east of Quebec to stage the game, although Moncton hosted a previous incarnation of the event known as the CHL All-Star Challenge in 1994. The game will be played on Jan. 16.

"The Canadian Hockey League is very excited to bring the 2013 Home Hardware CHL Top Prospects game to Atlantic Canada for the first time in the history of this prestigious event," CHL President David Branch said in a news release. "This event provides our players the opportunity to showcase their skills before hundreds of NHL scouts in a competitive best-on-best game in advance of the draft, while fans in Halifax and those watching across the country on Sportsnet and TVA Sports preview the next wave of NHL talent."

Current Mooseheads Jonathan Drouin, Nathan MacKinnon and Zachary Fucale are considered strong candidates to go high in the 2013 NHL draft so the timing of the move to Halifax makes sense.

"We look forward to welcoming 40 of the best NHL draft-eligible players in the CHL to the Halifax Metro Centre next January," Mooseheads majority owner Bobby Smith said in a news release. "Our season ticket holders and fans will be really interested to watch the top young players from the QMJHL match up with the best prospects from the OHL and the WHL."

The Mooseheads (36-20-2-4) are tied for sixth place overall with the Rimouski Oceanic but have one game in hand. The QMJHL season ends on March 18 so playoff positioning is a hot issue. Halifax has six games left.
