Ferris State’s Bob Daniels named coach of the year

Ferris State coach Bob Daniels was announced today as the winner of the Spencer Penrose Award as the American Hockey Coaches Association Division I Coach of the Year. Ferris State was 25-11-5 in winning the Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season title.

Daniels, guided the Bulldogs in their first Frozen Four appearance. Yesterday the Bulldogs faced Union College and to celbrate their coach, they came away with a win.

Kyle Bonis scored with 4:43 left yesterday, and the hockey fans wearing the crimson and gold of Ferris State in the Tampa Bay Times Forum erupted in anticipation of the school’s first appearance in the NCAA championship game.

Ferris State now readies for a David versus Goliath championship game at the Tampa Bay Times Forum against the Boston College Eagles. The Eagles, the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament, carved up the Gophers 6-1 on Thursday night in the second national semifinal game in front of 18,605 at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

According to spokesman Rob Bentley, three busloads of Ferris fans left Big Rapids tuesday for the 22-hour drive — mostly down I-75 — to reach Tampa for Thursday’s game.

Saturday’s title game is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2/ESPN3.
