GMHL Expands Again December 14, 2012 7:42 AM

The Greater Metro Hockey League wants to locate a team in Amherstburg Ontario. The GMHL currently has 15 teams across Ontario, and is looking to add at least two more teams for the 2013-2014 season.

While the GMHL calls itself Tier II Junior, and says they are a step below the Ontario Hockey League, the truth is somewhat different.

The GMHL is a non sactioned league, they are not recognized by Hockey Canada or the IIHF. The GMHL is not even close to the OHL in level of play, the league is actually at a junior b or junior c level in best cases. The perenial league leading Elliot Lake Bobcats left the GMHL to try its hand in the Hockey Canada Sanctioned NOJHL and are sitting in the celler.

The other big difference is that the GMHL is a pay to play league. Unlike most sanctioned leagues where players play for free, the GMHL can cost a player upward of $15,000.00 per season.

Matt Romaniski is heading the group briging the team to Amherstburg. He will be the team’s first coach when it starts playing next September.

Romaniski says volunteers will be needed, but the team will also bring jobs to town. “We will be looking to hire some people to help out with different things, say sales and different things,” says Romaniski. “You can look to [have] anywhere between five and ten people to join the team in the beginning.”

The team is without a name and a name the team contest is set to start. The new team will hit the ice at the United Communities Credit Union Complex next season starting September 2013.
