Indy Ice look for new home

The Indiana Ice are in the market for new home ice.

It’s uncertain what the United States Hockey League franchise will do after this season while the Indiana State Fairgrounds completes a two-year renovation of Pepsi Coliseum. Playing more games at Downtown Bankers Life Fieldhouse would be costly and not without scheduling conflicts.

Ice owner Paul Skjodt has talked for years about wanting to build a multi-purpose rink in the area, but financing has been the sticking point and plans have yet to leave the drawing board. Fairgrounds spokesman Andy Klotz said it’s not the end of hockey at the fairgrounds, just a hiatus.

"There won’t be any hockey in the building for two years," Klotz said. "After that, we expect hockey to be a big part of the new coliseum. That includes our youth program as well as hockey on a minor league or amateur level."

The city hasn’t had a professional hockey franchise since 2004.

Despite losing money on the USHL venture, Skjodt, who could not be reached for comment, is a diehard hockey fan who has reiterated his commitment to the amateur league.

Skjodt is rumored to be looking at other locations including Quad City and South Bend. The continued development in Indy is clearly at issue as Klotz comments specifically mention "minor league" or "amateur". The future of the Ice may not be determined until USA Hockey’s June meeting.
