Johnstown and the NAHL

The Cambria County War Memorial Authority on Monday unanimously agreed to begin negotiations with the North American Hockey League to bring a team to Johnstown.

The authority is hopeful that the Wentachee Wild team from Wenatchee, Wash., will be skating in Cambria County War Memorial Arena this fall.

The Authority will try to reach a three-year contract with the league with the option to renew the contract.

Fans want hockey but they also want affordable tickets, he said, adding that professional teams in the past didn’t survive in Johnstown because of economics. This league will offer affordable ticket prices, he said.

The league is stable and the one thing the authority doesn’t need is a professional team that could fold in a year, he said.

The Authorityalso received proposals from the Federal Hockey League and the Northern Professional Hockey League.

The drawback in the authority’s mind is the stability of the of the league.

The Northern Professional league doesn’t have any teams under contract.

The only question remaining is Wenatchee, will the franchise be available this season or next? Sources have said an announcment is coming soon.
