Johnstown weighing its options

Three competing offers to bring hockey back to Cambria County War Memorial Arena will be studied to find the best fit for local fans and the arena, leaders said Monday after hearing a presentation from one of the interested teams.

Bill Stewart’s presentation Monday outlining his proposal to bring Tier II Junior A hockey to town with the the North American Hockey League. Stewart said the Wenatchee Wild franchise would relocate here from Washington state.

The NAHL is competing with three-year-old Federal League and proposed Northern Professional Hockey League to be named primary tenant at the War Memorial, arena General Manager Michael Silva said.

NPHL has not dropped a single puck to date, and that some of league-organizer Chuck Harrison’s claims and tactics put up “red flags” during his recent trip to Johnstown trying to drum up public interest.

The NAHL, on the other hand, provides an opportunity for aspiring local high school hockey stars to gain attention from scouts and NCAA programs.

Wenatchee Wild franchise backers are looking at other possibilities and would like to have an answer in less than two weeks.

Federal League and NPHL representatives have been invited to present their ideas during a special workshop session, tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m. Monday. A final decision will be considered during a special March 8 meeting.
