Junior hockey coach’s tantrum nets suspension

A Manitoba Junior Hockey League coach who made a spectacle of himself in a profanity-laced tantrum has been suspended for 12 games.

Marlin Murray was seen throwing sticks, water bottles and various other items from behind the bench of the Dauphin Kings during a game against the Winnipeg Saints Thursday.

His rage seemed to be directed at game officials.

"This is a gong show," a hockey fan who saw the outburst and uploaded a video of the episode to YouTube, said.

On Saturday, league officials said Murray was handed a two-game suspension for gross misconduct and another 10-game suspension for "physical harassment of officials."

Kim Davis, the commissioner of the MJHL, told CBC News on Saturday that he is not pleased with what transpired at the game.

"Certainly I think this is an incident that if it could be taken back would be," Davis said.

He said the coach’s display may have been commonplace years ago, but should not be a part of today’s game.

"In earlier days, you know 30 and 40 years ago and perhaps 20, it was very common," he said. "But you know it’s very clear it’s very rare in our league and certainly in Junior-A hockey across the country."

The Kings lost the game 5 – 1. The Saints scored four of their goals on power plays.

The Dauphin club has also been ordered to pay an undisclosed fine to the league, over the incident.
