Junior hockey tourney set for Duluth Heritage Sports Center

The seven-team Superior International Junior Hockey League comes to town for a three-day Showcase at the Duluth Heritage Sports Center’s Sill Rink starting with Dryden (Ontario) facing the Iron Range at 2 p.m. Friday.

Seven games, all counting in the league standings, continue through Sunday. The 11-year league is for players preparing for college or professional competition.

The Duluth Clydesdales play Sioux Lookout (Ontario) at 5 p.m. Saturday and Fort Frances (Ontario) at 6 p.m. Sunday. The regular season ends Feb. 26.

The league-leading Wisconsin Wilderness (33-3-1), based in Spooner, has won 16 straight games and is ranked No. 5 among Canadian Junior Hockey League teams. The Wilderness, coached by former Minnesota Duluth defenseman Rod Aldoff, won the league regular-season and playoff titles in 2010-11.

Duluth (14-25-1) has improved on last season’s mark of 11-41-4 under first-year coach Chris Locker. Matt Morsette of Two Harbors leads Duluth in scoring with 23 goals and 18 assists for 41 points in 38 games. Scott Hunter of Eau Claire, Wis., has 40 points in 34 games, and captain Dillon Mershon has 24 points in 30 games.

Goalie Jason Dzurik of Loretto, Minn., has marks of .883 and 3.87, and Matt Arnold of Philadelphia has .871 and 4.88.

“The games in our league are cleanly played, fast, skilled games. The hockey is a good product,” said Clydesdales general manager Butch Williams.
