Korea’s U18 national team will be back at Division I level next year after winning gold at the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Division II Group A.

The Koreans won four out of five games en route to the gold medals in a tight contest in Heerenveen. Romania also had 12 points while Lithuania had to settle for bronze with 11 points.

Korea’s scores show how tight the event was as they all there clashes were one-goal games. They started with a 4-3 win over the Netherlands followed by a 3-2 shootout win against Croatia before losing 3-2 in a shootout against Lithuania.

Korea continued edging Romania, 4-3, and Great Britain by the same score in the last round.

Forward Dong Gun Lee of the Yonsei University was the most successful offensive player for the team with five goals (including two game-winners) and four assists. Geonwoo Kim scored three goals as a defenceman.

Both goalkeepers Korea used topped their opponents in save percentage with Yeonseung Lee reaching 93.9 per cent followed by Kweonyoung Kim with 92.5. And Korea was in need of quality goaltending especially in the key game against Romania, in which they were outshot 47-30.
