Lewiston Maine to make announcement today

As reported here at TJHN, Firland Management, the Maine Hockey Group and the Portland Pirates are expected to announce a deal for AHL, Junior and youth hockey to be developed and played at the Colisee.

The entities will host a joint news conference in the Baxter Brewing Co. Lounge at Firland’s Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston on Tuesday, where a source says officials from each of those organizations will announce a far-reaching, long-term hockey and business relationship that will likely affect area youth hockey, as well as future junior hockey endeavors.

The companies jointly announced the news conference Sunday afternoon, just prior to the Pirates’ game in Portland. Last week, Jim Cain, owner of Firland Management and the Colisee, confirmed that the Pirates of the American Hockey League would play seven games next season at the Lewiston rink while the Cumberland County Civic Center undergoes extensive renovations.

According to sources involved with Tuesday’s announcement, the agreement going forward will also involve a potential junior hockey partnership, as well as a youth hockey partnership.

Jim Cain and Firland Management purchased the Colisee from the City of Lewiston in 2008, with the Lewiston Maineiacs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League as the building’s primary tenant. Maineiacs’ ownership sold the franchise back to the league in 2011, and the QMJHL disbanded the team and dispersed the players across the remaining 17 teams.

This season, he hosted five Federal Hockey League games in what amounted to a test run of that pro organization’s ability to draw fans and turn a profit in Lewiston.

The Colisee achieved mixed results in attendance, but impressed the FHL enough that the league has continued pursuing the idea of a team at the Colisee.

Cain also has said that he’s been talking with MHG and the Pirates about the possibility of a partnership that would ultimately lead to acquiring an expansion team in the United States Hockey League, the top junior hockey league in the United States.

Cain has made no secret that the USHL is the target league for the future. Speculation in hockey circles is that the Federal Hockey League will be adding a Junior level circuit to their pro loop. The thought process is said to be that a junior league will create a development pool for the pro league.

Tuesday’s announcement at the Colisee is scheduled for 11 a.m.
