Michigan Warriors to remain in Flint

The Michigan Warriors have an agreement in place to return to Perani Arena and keep playing hockey in Flint.

Jim Cain, president of Firland Management — which owns and operates Perani Arena — confirmed the deal Monday.

The Warriors were given dormancy status by the North American Hockey League last month. According to Cain, they will play the 2012-2013 season. The NAHL office of communications said it hasn’t been informed of any agreement or decision by the Warriors, but Cain said the deal will be finalized within the next few days.

Teams have to confirm their intentions for next season with the league office by no later than March 15.

Under the new deal, current team owner Pat McEachern will remain the primary owner of the Warriors while Firland Management will take over most of the administrative and management operations.

At the forefront of issues for the Warriors has been attendance. Some reports have the Warriors average in-arena attendance between 400-500 per game while others have it around 660 fans per game. Either way, with their new commitment to Flint, the team will be hoping to drive up attendance numbers for next season.

This new deal between the arena and team all but assures that the Soo Eagles application to move the NAHL franchise from Traverse City will be approved by the Junior Council on wednesday.
