MNJHL Great Lakes Player of the Month Matthew Kostopoulos October 17, 2012 8:35 AM

The Great Lakes Division Player of the Month for September is Matthew Kostopoulos from the Chicago Bulldogs. The Chicago captain was on fire right out of the gate, with a three-point effort in his team’s first game, a 6-3 victory over the Illiana Blackbirds. He continued on a furious pace through the month of September, putting up seven goals and nine assists. Kostopoulos averaged two points per game with 16 in eight last month.

“Matt’s a special player because of his offensive creativity, great hands, great vision, plus speed and competitive spirit,” said Bulldogs coach Tom Clarke. “He’s always had the tools. He just went out and competed.”

Kostopoulos had five multi-point games in September. The Naperville, Ill. native scored three points in three of those games.

“Knowing Matt as I do, I knew he could challenge for the scoring title in our league,” Clarke said. “However, I have been more impressed with his leadership abilities and his commitment to playing two-way hockey.”

Even though Kostopoulos isn’t one of the larger players you’ll see on the ice, he can overshadow that with a combination of skill, effort and will to win. His coach is well aware of what the player nicknamed “K-Stop” can do.

“He has the skill set to play at the NA level, but I assume because of his size, some coaches have not given him the opportunity,” Clarke explained.

Chicago’s coach remembered a conversation he had with Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane when meeting him at a luncheon.

“He learned I was a coach and he told me to never discount a player you believe in because of his size,” said Clarke. “I agree.”

Also nominated for September Great Lakes Player of the Month: Kenton Grulkowski, Central Wisconsin Saints; Ryan Matteson, Fort Wayne Federals; Cameron Montalvo, Illiana Blackbirds; Nicolas LaChance, St. Louis Frontenacs; Zack Boucier, Tri City Ice Hawks; Adam Schoenfeld, Wisconsin Rampage; Josh Bobkovich, Wooster Oilers.
