NAHL Aberdeen Wings Hire New Coach (Third One This Year) January 15, 2013 7:54 AM

Travis Winter was formally introduced as the Aberdeen Wings’ coach on Monday during the team’s weekly radio show.

When we talk about teams in turmoil, few can be more tumultuous than the North American Hockey League Aberdeen Wings. The third year franchise is on its third coach this year.

Aberdeen hasn’t won a game since Nov. 30 and is currently on a 14-game winless streak, the longest active streak in the NAHL. Gone is interim Head Coach Garrett Strot. Strot replaced Pete Sauer on December 17th.

Confusing matters more, the team announced on Monday that the recently fired Pete Sauer will be the team’s director of business operations. While also recently fired Strot will help Winter through the initial transition.

Winter has been an assistant coach for the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders (USHL) since 2009. Travis is a native of St. Cloud, Minnesota. Prior to beginning his coaching career, Winter was a scholarship athlete and a member of the Bemidji State University Men’s Hockey team. While at Bemidji, Winter served as captain in his senior year and assistant captain the previous year.

He was named to the CHA All-Academic Team in 2006 through 2008. While studying at Bemidji, Winter was named to the President’s List and Dean’s List. He graduated in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Winter began his coaching career as a volunteer coach for Saint Cloud Youth Hockey and went on to serve as a summer volunteer coach at his alma mater, Saint Cloud Technical High School. He also served as a Volunteer Assistant Coach at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, MN. Nationally, he coached at the Select 15 National Camp in the summer of 2010.

Winter played in the USHL in 2004-05. In addition to his coaching responsibilities with the RoughRiders, he coordinated scouting activities and draft evaluations.

Winter arrives in Aberdeen with excellent credentials, and a high level of experience. Whith only weeks left in the season, will it be enough to turn the franchise around? That is is question fans are asking.
