NAHL Aberdeen Wings to get facility upgrades

An addition to the Odde Ice Center that will yield more accommodations for hockey was approved Tuesday by Brown County commissioners.

The 170-foot-by-30-foot expansion will be on the south side of the building at the county fairgrounds.

The first floor will include a larger locker room for the Aberdeen Wings junior hockey team, offices for team staff, a training area, laundry facilities for the Wings and space that would be used for storage and, eventually, more locker rooms for Aberdeen youth hockey.

The second floor will include suites for Wings games. There is still flexibility in the plans, but they call for four to six suites that will accommodate roughly 150 fans. The upgraded seats will be above the player benches and across the ice from the arena’s main bleachers.

Hockey officials said the addition will be paid for privately. No money will be requested from the county or Aberdeen City Council.

W ork likely will begin in the next couple of weeks and finish late in the year.

Ownership hopes that the locker room for the Wings will be finished by the time the team begins its season in September, though construction on other parts of the addition will continue after that.
