NAHL talks to Brookings South Dakota

The NAHL is hard at work these days. Settling new and moving franchises in short but efficient order has become something NAHL leaders are excellent at accomplishing.

The City of Brookings and Brookings youth hockey officials are still talking with the North American Hockey league and a potential ownership group about a junior hockey team starting play in the town next season.

“The franchise team has actually been negotiating with Brookings on two fronts,” said Jeff Weldon, Brookings city manager. “First, is for (use of the Larson Ice Center), and I have been negotiating with them. And the second is with the youth hockey program, which is the primary user of the facility."

A tenative agreement has been reached with the city and the franchise. There a few remaining details to be worked out between the franchise and the youth hockey association. Sources within the youth hockey association have informed TJHN that there is a possibility a deal may be completed before the end of the week.

The city of Brookings owns Larson Ice Center, whereas the Aberdeen Hockey Association owns Odde Ice Center, home of the Aberdeen Wings. The Wings rent the arena.
