NOJHL makes changes to game format June 21, 2012 8:16 AM

A 48-game schedule is now on tap for NOJHL members, down two games from previous seasons. The change was required due to the loss of the Soo Eagles franchise. By removing the two-division format, and all seven teams will now compete in a single conference and play a balanced 48-game schedule, with each club facing each other eight times.

The League also eliminated the shootout in favor of an additional 3-on-3 overtime period during league meetings. If the score remains tied after the five-minute four-on-four overtime period, a second five-minute overtime session will be played three-on-three.

The playoffs will now be determined by the first place regular season champion gets a first-round bye, with the remaining six teams facing off in quarter-final series. The three quarter-final winners join the first-place squad for the four-team semifinals.

The Soo Eagles franchise was granted dormany during the league meetings. The NOJHL will try to re-activate the franchise for the 2013-2014 season in another UP City.

If the Michigan based NOJHL franchise is to be moved and restarted, the NOJHL had better move fast as other leagues look to take over
Northern Michigan in the next 12 to 18 months.
