OHA approves Jr. B move to Brampton

After the demise of the Bramalea Blues and Brampton Capitals from the Junior A ranks over the past couple of seasons, it seemed that Brampton minor hockey graduates would have to look outside the city for a place to hone their skills this coming season and years ahead.

But David Arsenault had different ideas. And it seems the Ontario Hockey Association and Mid-Western Junior Hockey League liked his plan— making the possibility of a Junior B franchise for Brampton a reality.

Arsenault proposed moving the Owen Sound Junior B Greys, of which Arsenault is chairman of the board, to Brampton after the team continued to flounder financially in the northern community.

Last month the member teams of the Mid-Western Junior Hockey League, which includes Cambridge, Guelph, Kitchener, Waterloo, Brantford, Stratford, Listowel and Elmira, approved the moving of the Greys to Brampton.

The OHA, which is the governing body, rubber-stamped the location change on Wednesday evening, clearing the way for the Greys to set up shop in Greater Toronto Area.

While there are still a few housekeeping details to be worked out, it’s now full steam ahead for the Arsenault Hockey Group, which also operates the Orangeville Junior A Flyers and Fergus Junior C Devils.

The Brampton Junior B franchise is also in need of a name, and Arsenault is reaching out to the community for suggestions.

You can enter their ‘Name the Team’ contest and win a pair of season’s passes to the inaugural season. All you have to do is email to info@jraflyers.com, and include your name, address, telephone number and suggested name. Include ‘Name the Team ’ in the subject line.

If there is more than one winning submission, a random draw will take place among all those that entered the eventual team name.
Deadline for entries is May 11.

The new team is hoping to set up its inaugural camp for late-June. Anyone interested in a tryout can email their name and telephone number to the same info@ jraflyers.com address and someone will confirm the details when they are available.
