Opole HK Moves Another Player Up

Opole HK is in the player development business, and business is good.

Jonah Henderson, after spending the early part of this season with Comarch Cracovia in the Polish Hockey League, was returned to Opole HK. That return though has been short lived as another team from Germany called last week.

“When teams from higher levels call, we move the player on. Its simply what we are here to do.” Said Opole HK Owner and General Manager Joseph Kolodziej “While in the short term is certainly leaves a hole to fill in our roster, it is the promise we keep to players to move them up when we get calls, that keeps players coming to Opole. We wish Jonah the best in Germany and now we are looking for the next person to fill his role with the hope that player will also move up.”

Opole HK is in it’s second season competing in the MHL and EUHL. Competing in two leagues provides maximum exposure for players throughout Europe.

“Players in North America often talk about playing professionally in Europe when they are done with school and junior. Most never get the opportunity because you actually have to play in Europe to be seen in most cases. European teams do not have the budgets to scout North America, so unless you are an NHL draft pick or very high performing junior player in a top league, your chances of playing pro in Europe without playing some junior in Europe are pretty remote.”

Playing in Poland, Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia provides players with the opportunity to be scouted by those countries as well as scouts from the KHL, Germany, France, Lithuania, and Sweden.

“Because our roster is largely American and Canadian players, scouts from across Europe attend games. They get to see the North Americans here that they can not otherwise see. Statistics from websites just can not create opportunity like actually being seen in person. Just the other day, a scout came to watch practice, so its not just during games when players are getting exposure.”
