The first game in the inaugural season of Opole HK turned out to be one everyone will remember.
The Play Safe Stay Safe program, designed to offer a safe development environment for players around the world during the COVID-19 pandemic got off to a strong start Sunday evening.
Opole HK came out strong and lead after the first period one to zero. The second period though saw Polonia Bytom take advantage of their veteran lineup and they applied the pressure on the much younger Opole HK squad.
After Bytom eventually went up three to two in the third period, penalties derailed the Bytom attack.
With only seconds left in the third, Opole came back and tied the game forcing a three on three overtime.
With several chances to win in overtime, Opole could not find the back of the net with Mateusz Kolodziej shutting the door for Bytom.
In the shootout though Bytom curiously pulled Kolodziej and inserted veteran Domink Kraus. Coming in cold Kraus made some outstanding toe saves, while Opole goaltender Carter Wickson flashed the glove early to keep the game tied.
In the end, Opole HK came out on top in the best of five shootout by a margin of two goals to one. The local Opole hockey crowd was very pleased with the result.
Next week Opole HK will hit the road for a pair of games against LKH Lodz and UKS Zaglebie Sosnowiec.
