Port Huron Fighting Falcons Camp August 6, 2012 8:25 AM

How about focussing on some hockey being played?

With nearly every media outlet in the Port Huron area focussing on the past, Steve Shannon and the Fighting Falcons organization were looking toward the future this weekend. Why? Because it was time for final player evaluations and the assembling of a team.

With so much being made of Bill Warren, Maribeth Hayes and the troubles of the past, someone needed to start looking toward the future. Considering the NAHL season is only a few weeks away, and most teams have either been picked or are in the process of picking their rosters, the Falcons could not get caught up in the past.

The Booster Club, was at the arena early showing their support with good numbers. A hospitality room was open all weekend for those families, players and scouts attending camp. One of the subtle differences and the extra effort that is coming to be expected by everyone in the Port Huron organization.

Having a chance to see the on ice future over the weekend, its clear that the hockey staff is focussed on hockey. As it should be.

With just over 80 players to evaluate, the scouts were forced into a tough decision making process. Returning players, and free agents all worked hard throughout the weekend. In the end it was the subtle differences between players that helped shape the team.

Steve Shannon assembled a large group of expereienced hockey people to assist in the player evaluation process. Coaches from high profile midget programs, veteran college and pro players, as well as tier III junior scouts. Everyone provided input, but Shannon is the guy making the final call. Watching the final game of camp yesterday, Shannon was forced to make some very tough decisions.

The five games played over the weekend were competitive, hard hitting, and skilled. Unlike some camps, the Falcons played full 20 minute stop time periods. Conditioning was tested, and the players were prepared.

One returning player that stuck out was Kody Polin. Entering his final junior season, Polin showed all weekend why he should be a NCAA candidate.

Leaving yesterday, as the staff were conductin one on one exit interviews, it became very clear that the hockey department was being run in an organized manner. If any of the other NAHL teams think that the Falcons will be distracted by off ice issues of last season, they may want to rethink their position. This team will be ready to compete in September.
