RBC Cup tournament teams finalized

Teams have now been finalized for 2012 Royal Bank Cup national championship tournament, which begins this weekend in Humboldt and runs May 4-13.

Joining the host Humboldt Broncos, who were crowned both Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and Anavet Cup champions, are the Manitoba Junior Hockey League champion Portage Terriers, Fred Page Cup champion Woodstock, N.B., Slammers, Doyle Cup champion Pentincton Vees and the Dudley Hewitt Cup champion Soo Thunderbirds from Ontario.

The Soo T-Birds defeated the Stouffville, Ont., Spirit 5-3 in the Dudley Hewitt Cup final. The Woodstock Slammers, from New Brunswick, edged the Nepean, Ont., Raiders 3-2 in the Fred Page Cup final on the weekend.

This past week, the British Columbia champion Penticton Vees claimed the Doyle Cup by taking a best-of-seven series 4-1 over the Alberta Junior Hockey League champion Brooks Bandits.

Host Humboldt finally finished off the pesky Portage Terriers on Sunday night. After blowing a 3-0 series lead and then losing Game 6 in triple overtime near midnight Saturday, the Broncos needed a Game 7 to dispose of the Terriers with a 4-0 shutout.

The five-team RBC Cup will officially begin this Friday.

Teams will be arriving in Humboldt either Thursday or Friday. Pre-tournament practices will be scheduled for Friday at the Elgar Petersen Arena, followed by an afternoon barbecue.

The RBC Cup opening ceremonies will go Friday night at the EPA. Following opening ceremonies Friday, the RBC Cup action begins Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. with Penticton Vees playing the Soo Thunderbirds. At 7: 30 p.m. Saturday, the host Broncos meet the Woodstock Slammers. On Sunday, the Portage Terriers play the T-Birds in the 3 p.m. afternoon contest, followed by the host Broncos against the Vees at 7: 30 p.m.
