Rio Grande to get NAHL team

As TJHN reported some months ago, the CHL is leaving the Rio Grande Valley.

Multiple CHL sources have confirmed that the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees are in the process of selling their assets. The team is expected to announce the decision today, ending its nine-season run in the CHL.

The North American Hockey League has agreed to place a team in the building for the upcoming season. It is not known which NAHL team is moving to Hidalgo. It’s possible the new franchise will keep the Killer Bees’ name.

Once the Laredo Bucks decided they would not return the Bee’s fate was fairly easy to determine.

What happens to long time CHL coach Terry Ruskowski? Coaching at the Junior level, if he accepted, could allow him to greatly influence the development of young players.

But what of the rumored CH1L? Why would Rio Grande Ownership not wait for this rumored league and join it? Why would the arena not wait for the CHL to place one of those franchises within its confines?

Once again, the reader can speculate on the fact that if the CH1L is more than a rumor, why would the CHL not be able to keep the NAHL from moving in?

The fact behind Rio Grandes departure from the CHL to the NAHL is that the CHL is not in the junior hockey business. The NAHL seem makes great sense for any team needing to make a change in their financial model.
