SJHL Expansion On Hold June 18, 2012 8:07 AM

Under consideration for some time already, aparently more time will be needed by the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League to decide on the Onion Lake expansion bid. The application was tabled for review by the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

Onion Lake Cree Nation, which is located 30 miles north of Lloydminster, has an adequate arena for the program. Population is the question. Is there enough people on the reserve and surrounding area to support a hockey franchise? SJHL bylaws require a minimum population base of 5,000. In a short term view, there is little doubt that the community will embrace the team, it is the long term survival that is a concern when looking at the population base.
