T-Birds win NOJHL title

The NOJHL season is over, and the Soo Thunderbirds ended it at home with a 3-2 win over the North Bay Trappers..

Matt Amadio scored the game-winning goal with 12:46 remaining to break a 2-2 tie as the Thunderbirds claimed the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League championship.

The Thunderbirds advance as the NOJHL representative at the Dudley-Hewitt Cup championship in Thunder Bay next week.

After a scoreless first period, Kevin Michelcavage opened the scoring for the Thunderbirds 6:53 into the second on a power play, before the Trappers went ahead 2-1 on goals from Brandon Janke and Ryan Brain.

Michelcavage tied the game 2-2 late in the second period.

The Trappers had a few scoring chances in the dying minutes but could not find the equalizer.

Shots were even at 39-39, with John Kleinhans making 37 saves for the win and Mitchell Knight making 36 saves for the Trappers.

The T-Birds were a force this season, finishing on top in regular season play in the NOJHL and losing just twice in the playoffs, once during a round-robin game to the Soo Eagles. The T-Birds now look to ride that championsip wave into the Dudley Hewitt, next week in Thunder Bay.
