Team USA Wins Gold January 5, 2013 10:13 AM

What an early morning for a saturday.

After watching Team Canada loose to the host Russians 6 to 5 in over time, I tried to focus on the gold medal game between the US and Sweeden. Thanks to my personal sponsor Juan Valdez I was able to keep my eyes open and my mind focussed.

While Sweeden was able to get the first goal, the US soon began to edge them in one on one battles.

Rocco Grimaldi exhibited the speed and skill that should make him an NHL regular. Scoring the two for team USA, the University of North Dakota product never took a shift off.

Kitchner Rangers Goalie and Anahiem Ducks prospect John Gibson made some fantastic saves. One save near the six minute mak of the third period that could have slipped under his right leg pad while doing the splits was certainly a difference maker. With 6 minutes left in the third, Gibson robbed the Sweeds of what would have been a game tieing goal.

With 1:40 to go in the third Sweeden pulled their goalie, but it was not enough. Vince Trocheck scored an empty netter with 17 seconds left.

Over all it was a great tournament. Team Sweeden will look to rebound next year on home ice as the tournament moves to Malmo.
