Team USA Wins Will Face Canada Again January 2, 2013 8:38 AM

Canada will face the United States in a semifinal at the world junior hockey championship Thursday.

The United States beat the Czech Republic 7-0 in a quarter-final Wednesday. On the heals of Calgary Flames prospect Johnny Gaudreaus offensive outburst team USA is advancing. Gaudreau netted three of USA’s five power-play goals on Wednesday to lift the USA to a 7-0 quarterfinal win against the Czech Republic. The Boston College standout is 5-8, 155, has five goals and an assist in the past two games.

The win earns the Americans a semifinal rematch against Canada Thursday (4 a.m, ET, NHL Network). Canada edged the U.S. 2-1 in pool play Sunday. Canada earned a bye through the quarterfinal round by virtue of winning Group B and has yet to be defeated in the tournament.

While Team Canada rested, Team USA has scored 16 times in their last two games, after scoring just once against Canada and once against Russia.

The rematch sets up to be a good one. With such a close game last time around, tomorrow figures to be no different. Familiar foes, familiar faces on each side of the ice.

Sweden is the other semifinalist and will meet the quarter-final winner between Russia and Switzerland.
