Temporary home for Indy Ice?

There is growing speculation that the Indy Ice may be very close to finding a temporary home. Because the Ice’s home arena may be closed for as long as two years, finding a temporary home is an urgent priority.

Recently conversations have taken place regarding Bloomington Illinois, and Quad City (Moline Illinois) becoming temporary homes for the Ice. This would make a lot of sense on several fronts.

Either city offers a quality arena, and both offer an educated hockey fan base. Bloomington and Moline have been hosts to Central Hockey League franchises of late. Both of those CHL franchises are struggling financialy and will most likely not be back in the CHL for the 2012-2013 season.

Both city’s could also be seen as test markets for USHL expansion upon the Ice returning to Indy. This would be very smart for the USHL to examine. Certainly USAH will approve this temporary relocation because of exigent circumstances and solid ownership. The USHL then can open a new market to its product for two seasons.

During this two season run, a local owner for an expansion team can be found. Indy goes home and the USHL has a ready made market with a fan base already in place. That is smart business.

Coupled with a new team in Marion Indiana, Moline or Bloomington fit very nicely into the travel foorprint of the USHL.
