Tennyson Junior Hockey Club Joins Midwest Junior Hockey League May 24, 2012 4:38 PM

The AAU American Athletic Union announced today that a New Junior Hockey franchise has been granted to the Detroit Michigan Metropolitan Area.

The Tennyson Chevrolet Junior Hockey Club

The AAU sanctioned team will participate in the Newly formed Midwest Junior Hockey League MWJHL. The MWJHL will be a 12 Team league consisting of 6 Michigan Teams including Wayne, Hartland, Fraser, Sault Ste Marie and Traverse City along with teams from Toledo, Cleveland, Dayton Ohio as well as Louisville Kentucky, Kankakee Il and Bloomington IL. The Tennyson Chevrolet club will play out of the Ice Box Arena’s in Brownstown Michigan and will be owned and operated by AZ Sports Inc. The team’s primary sponsor will be Tennyson Chevrolet (Livonia Michigan) which is celebrating its 56th year as a Chevrolet Dealer and is located in Livonia Michigan.

Club President and Tennyson Chevrolet General Manager Keith Lang also announced Today that Grosse Ile and lifelong downriver Resident Dan Vasquez has been named GM and Head Coach. “Coach Vasquez brings over 30 years of Coaching and Management experience to our program. Our vision and passion is to provide a viable program that will allow student athletes in the downriver area to be able to pursue their goals and we accept our responsibility to not only provide the vehicle in which a young player can achieve those goals but also provide the mentorship in the community, classroom and arena needed to reach that success.”

‘Junior Hockey’s US roots can be traced right here in the Downriver area with organizations like Stu Evans Big D and Paddock Pools pioneering the development through-out the Detroit Area in the early to mid 70’s and we are very happy to head up a revival of that blueprint. Our goals are to provide community involvement, community pride and an entertainment value to every kid and family in the area. The players in our league will be from the local high schools and midget programs not from outstate but right here from your hometowns. Recent programs whom were uprooted from this area were operated and owned by individuals whom were not from this area and they built teams primarily from players whom were not even from this state. Michigan is one of the top producers of hockey players in the country and yet our players have to continually leave our state to pursue their dreams. The sad thing is the evolution of this game has kids in hockey believing if they don’t leave home at 16 and don’t spend the following 4 years on buses traveling around the country that they have no chance to play at a higher level or even have a chance to play at the collegiate level. Were out to prove that this is not the only option and you should not have to sacrifice your family, your friends and your high school experiences to succeed at this game. More importantly it is the mission of every program in our league that our players and team’s understand that they also have a responsibility to give back to the communities, mentoring students and becoming interactive within those communities .”

The Tennyson Chevrolet Junior Hockey Club will begin conditioning and pre tryout skates on Thursday Evenings beginning May 24th and will be announcing an open tryout camp tentively scheduled to begin August 1st.
