Thunderbirds maintain hold on top spot in NOJHL

The Soo Thunderbirds picked up a 7-4 victory over their cross-border rivals, the Soo Eagles, on Saturday night in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action.

The Thunderbirds built up a 7-0 lead into the second period before holding off a charge by the Eagles in the final period of the game that saw the Eagles score three goals.

Micky Sartoretto led the way offensively for the Thunderbirds with three goals and an assist in the win. Matt Amadio chipped in with a goal and two assists. Brett Campbell, Corey Jackson and Kevin Michelcavage also scored for the Thunderbirds in the win. Greg Sartoretto set up a pair of goals for the Thunderbirds.

Thunderbirds goaltender John Kleinhans stopped 38 shots against his former club.

Connor Lyons had a goal and an assist to lead the offensive attack for the Eagles. Josh Borgen, George Curry and Shane Totten also scored in the loss.

Luis Puig stopped 20 shots for the Eagles before being pulled after the fifth Thunderbirds goal. Chris Truehl stopped seven of nine shots the rest of the way,.

Next up for the Thunderbirds is a home-and-home series next weekend against Blind River. The Thunderbirds host Blind River Friday night at the Essar Centre before travelling to Blind River the following night.

The Eagles are scheduled to travel to Kirkland Lake next Friday though an ownership situation has led to the postponement of some Kirkland Lake games. Next Sunday the Eagles are in North bay to take on the Trappers.
