TJHN NHL Draft Projections

Fifteen of the top fifty North American skaters rated in the upcoming NHL draft are playing in the United States. One third of the top players in the United States? Can this be accurate?

When looking at the mid term rankings, ten players from the USHL, two from NCAA programs, and three High School players are represented. Looking a little further into the rankings, only three of these players come from outside of the United States, but they did choose US based programs over other options.

When looking at the success of developing hockey players for the NHL, it seems as though the trend of recent US success is continuing. It was not so long ago the the US and its players were seen as secondary thoughts in many teams draft process. Times have certainly changed.

Looking further into the North American ratings, ten of the top thirty six rated goaltenders in North America are coming from US based programs. Every one of these goaltenders is born and raised in the United States. Roughly one third of the top thirty six are US born? The USHL, NAHL, Gunnery Prep, and Midget AAA are represented.

The numbers get even better for the US when looking at American born players in the Canadian Major Junior Leagues.

While final ratings won’t be released until next month, we couldn’t wait. These are our first round draft pick projections:

Jacob Trouba, D, USA U-18 (USHL)

Zemgus Girgensons, C, Dubuque (USHL)

Michael Matheson, D, Dubuque (USHL)

Phillip Di Giuseppe, LW, Univ. of Michigan (CCHA)

Stefan Matteau, C, USA U-18 (USHL)

Jordan Schmaltz, D, Green Bay (USHL)

Brady Skjei, D, USA U-18 (USHL)

Although we really like the US based crop of Goaltenders we dont see them jumping up into the first round. We will revist this story as we get closer to the NHL draft.
