UNO Recruit Troy Stecher named captain of Penticton Vees July 13, 2012 7:40 AM

Nebraska-Omaha Recruit Troy Stecher has been named captain of the defending RBC national junior A champion Penticton Vees for the coming BCHL season.

Stecher is coming off what many would consider a dream 2011-12 season that saw him register career highs in both regular season and playoff scoring. Picking up 42 points in 53 games and winning a gold medal with Team Canada West at the World Junior A Challenge.

Stecher then went on to dominate in the playoffs, contributing 15 points in 26 playoff games. Those numbers lead to being named the top defenseman at the RBC Cup. He is already entering his third year with the Vees and was one of the team’s alternate captains last season.

Stecher secured his scholarship to Nebraska-Omaha following his rookie season in Penticton when he was just 16. Since that time he has grown into a leader, and continued to develop as a talent. UNO will be receiving a very well rounded student athlete.

Over looked in the NHL draft, Stecher is considered a sleeper for a late round pick in the 2013 draft. COnsidered undersized, Stecher has a plying style similar to Brian Rafalski. A strong skater, and offensively skilled, he can bring a lot to a team needing a spark on the blue line.

Stecher, has also landed a role in the short-feature production Stanley Cup Odyssey. The Network Entertainment 3-D movie is being captured at Memorial Arena and will be premiered at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto in November.
