The Troy Youth Hockey Association (TYHA) is less than a month away from hosting the premier Midget Minor national sports event; The 2013 Toyota- USA Hockey Tier II 16U National Championships. Troy, Mich.
The field of 40 teams for this year’s Tier II U16 Nationals is complete with local teams St. Clair Shores Saints, MI Ice Hawks and host team Troy Sting competing against teams traveling from Maine to Alaska and many states in between. The Southern CT Stars do not have terribly far to travel, but they will be accompanied by 1960 Olympic gold medalist and Stars grandfather, Bob McVey, who helped win the first ever gold medal for Team USA in hockey.
You can join dozens of scouts who will also be in attendance at the Troy Sports Center to watch fast paced, big hitting hockey by an exceptional group of young men. There are those who have overcome injuries like Jayson Good, captain of Team SD who was knocked out of competition last year when a clean hit ruptured his spleen. To some, the damage was only to their social media status as they travel “Gilligan’s Island” style from Alaska with no cell phones!
Their less than popular coach began collecting phones in the beginning of the season, and says they have grown together as a team and actually talk to each other. Their 10-0-2 regular season record shows the lack of distraction is paying off on the ice. In Virginia it wasn’t a player, but a friend who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Bobby Hally, captain of the Ashburn Xtreme rallied a group of 100 to support his efforts around a fundraising campaign they call Be Brave and Shave. Together they have already raised over $62,000 in childhood cancer research dollars for Children’s National Medical Center. At their end of season banquet, 35 players and coaches shaved their heads, and the Nationals team will be proudly sporting the look at they compete for the crown next week.
The competition will run Apr 3-7, 2013, and will bring thousands to local hotels and restaurants like Tim Horton’s, Joe Kools, Buffalo Wild Wings, Shield’s Pizza, Hooters, Brio and Mongolian BBQ, who are also sponsors of the tournament. Wed, Apr 3rd will also offer hockey fans another opportunity to see the Stanley Cup. Lord Stanley will be at TSC from 9am-6pm. photos will be available for purchase, and all proceeds will go to the TYHA hardship fund which keeps great kids playing a great sport. “It is a great honor for Troy Youth Hockey Association to host the Toyota-USA Hockey Midget Tier II National Championships here in Troy, Michigan,” said Dan Jaroshewich, President of the TYHA. “In addition to some great hockey, at the end of the week someone will be crowned as the National Champion.
