CHL Import Draft Today June 27, 2012 7:03 AM

The CHL will hold its annual European Import Draft beginning at 9:00 am. The two round draft will proceed with each Major Junior League se;ecting in invesrse order of their standing from last season.

Each CHL team is allowed to carry up to two European players. Last year the London Knights added Olli Maatta with the first-overall selection. The Quebec Ramparts selected Mikhail Grigorenko with the second pick. Both prospects became major impact players and went on to be first-round picks in the 2012 draft.

This year the expansion Sherbrooke Phoenix have traded the first pick to the Moncton Wildcats. The Prince Albert Raiders, Erie Otters, Gatineau Olympiques (acquired from P.E.I) and Prince George Cougars round out the top five.

The Peterborough Petes acquired the 42nd overall pick in Wednesday’s CHL Import Draft Tuesday moving up from 69. The London Knights made a trade with the Petes recently obtaining the 9th over all pick and are rumored to be using that pick on Swedish goaltender Oscar Dansk, who was selected 31st overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets at the NHL draft last Saturday. Another rumor has Windsor trading with Erie to get into the 3 spot to grab Dansk, while Erie is claiming to be looking for a defenseman.

Ivan Barbashev, Sergey Tolchinskiy, and Valery Nichushkin are three very highly coveted Russian prospects and although none of them have publicly stated that they plan on playing in the CHL next year, it is rumored that all three are interested. Will we see another Grigorenko from this group? Tolchinskiy’s agent is Igor Larionov, and he has made it clear he prefers his clients to develop in the CHL. Expect the 5-foot-7, 150-pound center to follow in the footsteps of another Larionov Client, Nail Yakapov.

As with most drafts, today is expected to be an interesting day. More trades are expected, abd while it’s not the easiest thing in the world for European players to leave their homes for the draw of playing Canadian junior hockey, many elite prospects are taking the leap with the hope that it’s a path to the NHL.
